The Master Foodie has a blog

Jamie Oliver has a blog now. :) He used to have this ongoing diary on his old site as well, but it was not the classical blog format, i didn't like reading the long entries. Now it's a blog complete with photos and it looks like the entries are more brief but frequent. Yay!
(And i am not even a hardcore Jamie fan, mind you... :) )

Welcome news for a conscious consumer ^2

Holy crap. What's going on? Today i heard not one but two welcome news reports, both on CNN, that actually give me hope that mankind is finally beginning to come to its senses.

First, this morning CNN had a report about Fair Trade Fortnight, a UK event starting this week to promote fair trade products and the head of the FT foundation mentioned some pretty interesting facts, e.g. that in some product categories fair trade now account for as much as 25% of all sales. (Plus, here in Austria there is a billboard campaign on the way claiming that some 80% of bananas sold here are fair trade.) Impressive, to say the least.

Then, i saw the news that McDonald's is phasing out Supersized fries and drinks.

Maybe the world is not going down just yet?

Fine cooking and garlic extravaganza

On a brighter note: i finally found a cooking magazine that's not boring: Fine Cooking. They have great recipes and good instructions and tips that actually teach you how to cook. YAY! Being the impulse buyer that i am, i immediately bought a back issue that has a supposedly genius article about baking chocolate chip cookies (i didn't have much luck with baking them before), and i signed up for a trial issue. They send it surface mail so i won't get it till 2 months from now ... ah, the anticipation will kill me!

Today, to fight my horrible cold i cooked garlic soup (yesterday i had Spaghetti aglio e olio (spaghetti with lots of garlic and olive oil). I found the recipe online that was just what i wanted, easy to cook, yummy creamy taste: cook 1 cup garlic cloves, 1 cup of diced potatoes, 1 cup chopped carrot and 2 1/2 cups veggie broth, and blend in a blender. Very very yummy!

I hope all the garlic will work to fight the bacteria or virus that's making me ill. Cobined in the two meals i have now consumed 3 small and 1 giant (believe me, it was huge - like a larger onion) garlic heads. (No, i don't plan to go among people in the following day or so.)

I am cooking Split Yellow

I am cooking Split Yellow Pea Curry right now, and it looks yummy, but if you ever cook this, count at least 2 times the cooking time that is in the recipe. The yellow peas need at least an hour to cook, not 20 minutes!

Sounds like a good snack:

Sounds like a good snack: Mojo Potatoes. Reading the recipe reminded me of the yummy spicy potato wedges we had when we were forced to go to a McDonald's on our greek holida on Crete in July. I swear i would be the last one to go to McDonald's in a foreign country (or even home), but it was so hot and we couldn't find ANY restaurant for 20 minutes, so we had no choice.

But... the experience was much better that i initially expected, because they had these special Greek foods: grilled chicken sandwich in pita with salad and the potato wedges. It was yummy, although a bit McDonalds tasting as all food are there...

I have a horrible cold,

I have a horrible cold, and i accidentally came upon this: Garlic and Herb Pasta, which is supposed to make the cold/flu go away the next day.

I found it at this cool site: John's Vegetarian Recipes and Information, which is a collection of recipes from mailing lists and rec.food archives. Lots of yummy stuff!

I like personal recipe collections like these... there are so many recipes out there it is nice when you have someone's personal thoughts on them. Like i would have never realized garlic and herb pasta is good for colds, even though i know garlic is.
